Understanding Body Sculpting Side Effects
Non-surgical body sculpting treatments have become popular in the UK because they offer body-contouring benefits without surgery or significant recovery time. As with any aesthetic treatment, side effects can occur — and understanding which ones are expected helps you feel confident going into your sessions.
This guide covers the most common side effects associated with techniques used in the UK, including ultrasound cavitation, radio frequency (RF), lipo laser, vacuum therapy, and wood therapy (maderotherapy). For a broader overview of how these treatments work, see our complete body sculpting guide.
Common Side Effects: What to Expect
The majority of side effects from non-surgical body sculpting are mild, short-lived, and a normal part of how your body responds to treatment.
Redness and warmth are the most frequently reported reactions. The treated area may look flushed and feel warm to the touch for a few hours after a session. This is particularly common with radio frequency, which uses heat energy to stimulate collagen and target fat cells beneath the skin’s surface.
Temporary tenderness can occur, especially after vacuum therapy or wood therapy. The sensation is often compared to mild muscle soreness after exercise. It should ease within 24 to 48 hours.
Tingling or buzzing during and shortly after ultrasound cavitation is normal. Some clients also notice a faint ringing sound during the treatment itself — this is caused by the ultrasound frequency and is not a cause for concern.
Increased thirst is commonly reported after cavitation sessions. This is your body signalling that it needs extra fluids to support the lymphatic system as it processes the treatment.
Side Effects by Treatment Type
Different modalities have slightly different profiles. Here is a quick reference:
| Treatment | Common Side Effects | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Ultrasound cavitation | Buzzing sensation, mild thirst, slight tenderness | A few hours |
| Radio frequency (RF) | Redness, warmth, temporary skin sensitivity | 2–6 hours |
| Lipo laser | Mild warmth, occasional skin sensitivity | 1–4 hours |
| Vacuum therapy | Redness, possible light bruising | 24–48 hours |
| Wood therapy | Tenderness, light bruising, redness | 24–72 hours |
| Lymphatic drainage massage | Increased urge to urinate, mild fatigue | 12–24 hours |

How to Support Your Body After a Session
Managing side effects is largely about giving your body what it needs to process the treatment effectively.
Hydration is key. Drink at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water in the 24 hours following cavitation or any treatment that targets fat cells. The lymphatic system depends on fluid to flush waste products from the body.
Avoid heat immediately after treatment. Saunas, hot baths, and intense exercise that raises your core temperature significantly are best avoided for 24 hours after RF or cavitation, as the treated area is already warm.
Wear comfortable clothing. Tight waistbands or restrictive garments over freshly treated areas can cause unnecessary irritation. Loose, breathable fabrics are best.
Light movement helps. A gentle walk after your session supports lymphatic circulation. Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of treatment but return to normal activity the following day unless advised otherwise.

What Is Not Normal: Signs to Watch For
While serious adverse effects from reputable non-surgical body sculpting are uncommon, there are signs that warrant professional attention.
- Redness, swelling, or heat that worsens after 24 hours rather than improving
- Blistering or burns on the skin surface
- Severe pain during or after treatment
- Prolonged bruising that does not fade within a week
- Signs of infection such as discharge, fever, or spreading redness
If you experience any of these, contact your practitioner promptly. If you are unsure, seeking advice from your GP is always a sensible step.
A well-trained practitioner will conduct a thorough consultation before treatment to identify any contraindications — factors that would make a particular treatment unsuitable for you. At Wumi Body & Face Studio, all new clients have a consultation before any treatment begins.
Who May Be More Sensitive
Certain individuals may notice more pronounced, though still temporary, reactions:
- Those with sensitive skin may experience more visible redness after RF or cavitation
- Clients who bruise easily should let their practitioner know before vacuum therapy or wood therapy sessions
- Anyone on blood-thinning medication should discuss this during their consultation
- Those with lymphatic conditions should seek medical clearance before lymphatic drainage massage
Realistic Expectations: Results Take Time
It is worth noting that body sculpting is not a one-session fix and is not a medical or weight-loss treatment. Results build gradually over a course of sessions and are influenced by lifestyle factors including hydration, activity levels, and diet. You can read more about this in our guide to non-surgical body sculpting in the UK.
The appearance of the treated area may fluctuate between sessions — this is normal. Consistency across a recommended course of treatments, combined with the aftercare steps above, gives the best opportunity for visible improvement in skin firmness and body contour.
Booking a Consultation
The best way to understand which treatment is right for you — and what to expect from it — is to speak with a qualified practitioner. Wumi Adewumi has over 10 years of experience in non-surgical body sculpting and is CPD-accredited through Curvology Academy. Sessions are available at the studio in Dartford, Kent, or via a mobile home service across Kent, London, and Essex.

Non-surgical treatments have no downtime, but results build gradually and vary between individuals. Not a weight-loss or medical service. A consultation and suitability check are required; you must be 18 or over.
