Compression Garments After Slimming Treatments: Do You Need Them in the UK?

Clients often ask whether wearing a compression garment after treatments like ultrasound cavitation or radio frequency will help their results. The answer depends on the treatment — here is what the evidence and professional practice actually suggest.

Where the Compression Garment Question Comes From

The idea of wearing compression garments after slimming treatments largely originates in post-surgical care. After liposuction or abdominoplasty, a surgeon prescribes compression wear because the tissue has been physically disrupted and needs structural support during healing. Compression in that context is a medical instruction.

When non-surgical slimming treatments became popular, the same question naturally followed — and some clinics began recommending compression garments to clients even where the clinical rationale is quite different. Understanding that difference helps you make a genuinely informed decision about your aftercare.

If you are exploring your options as part of slimming treatments in the UK, knowing what actually supports results versus what is optional can save you money and focus your attention on what matters.

How Non-Surgical Slimming Treatments Work

Non-surgical treatments such as ultrasound cavitation and radio frequency work without incisions or tissue disruption. Cavitation uses low-frequency sound waves to break down fat cell membranes; radio frequency heats the deeper layers of skin to stimulate collagen and tighten tissue; lipo laser uses low-level laser energy to encourage fat cells to release their contents; and wood therapy applies targeted mechanical pressure using shaped wooden tools.

In every case, the tissue remains structurally intact. There is no wound, no swelling from surgical trauma, and no disruption that requires external support. This is an important distinction when evaluating whether compression garments serve a genuine purpose.

For a broader overview of how these approaches fit into body sculpting as a whole, the UK body sculpting guide is a useful starting point.

What Compression Garments Are Designed to Do

Compression garments provide graduated external pressure to a treated area. In a surgical context, this pressure:

  • Reduces post-operative swelling and bruising
  • Holds tissue in place while it heals in a new contour
  • Provides physical support when muscles and connective tissue have been cut

After non-surgical treatment, none of these factors are present. There is no surgical wound healing, no repositioned tissue, and no structural damage requiring support. The question becomes whether compression offers any secondary benefit — such as mild lymphatic stimulation or reduced fluid retention — and the evidence here is limited and inconsistent.

What Actually Supports Results After Non-Surgical Slimming Treatments

The aftercare steps that consistently matter for non-surgical slimming treatments are:

  • Hydration. Drinking two litres of water or more in the 24–48 hours following treatment helps the lymphatic system process and eliminate the contents of disrupted fat cells.
  • Lymphatic drainage. A lymphatic drainage massage directly stimulates the lymphatic vessels and accelerates the body’s natural clearance process. This is the most evidence-supported aftercare step for cavitation and lipo laser in particular.
  • Gentle movement. A 20–30 minute walk after treatment encourages lymphatic circulation without overloading the body.
  • Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals for 24 hours, as both place additional demand on the liver and lymphatic system at a time when the body is already processing treatment by-products.
  • Consistency across a course of treatments. Results from non-surgical body sculpting build gradually over multiple sessions, not from a single appointment.

A compression garment does not meaningfully substitute for any of the above, and skipping these steps whilst relying on compression is unlikely to serve you well.

When Compression Might Be Lightly Helpful

There are some scenarios where light, comfortable compression may offer a minor benefit after non-surgical treatment:

  • If you experience mild swelling or fluid retention in the treated area, a light support garment can feel comfortable and may reduce the appearance of temporary puffiness.
  • If you are having treatments on the abdomen and plan to be on your feet for long periods immediately after, a gentle support band can reduce discomfort.

These are comfort measures, not clinical requirements. If you choose to wear compression after a non-surgical treatment, opt for light graduated compression (15–20 mmHg) rather than firm post-surgical garments, and remove it if it feels restrictive or uncomfortable.

This comparison illustrates why the aftercare protocols are so different. Non-surgical treatments from Wumi — including vacuum therapy and wood therapy (maderotherapy) — are designed to fit into your normal week without the recovery demands of surgery.

What Wumi Recommends

At Wumi Body & Face Studio, aftercare advice is tailored to each client and each treatment during the appointment. As a general guide:

  • Prioritise hydration above all else
  • Consider booking a lymphatic drainage massage within 48 hours of an inch-loss session
  • Move gently — a walk is ideal
  • Avoid alcohol, saunas, and heavy meals for 24 hours
  • Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing after your appointment

A compression garment is not part of Wumi’s standard aftercare protocol for non-surgical slimming treatments, because the clinical need is simply not the same as it is after surgery.

If you have questions about aftercare for your specific treatment plan, you are welcome to book a consultation or get in touch before your first session. Wumi offers a 30-minute paid consultation to discuss your goals and what to expect at each stage of your journey.

For more on what to expect from the recovery side of non-surgical body sculpting, see the body sculpting recovery guide.

Non-surgical treatments have no downtime, but results build gradually and vary between individuals. Not a weight-loss or medical service. A consultation and suitability check are required; you must be 18 or over.
