Lipo Cavitation UK: What to Expect Before, During and After

Lipo cavitation is one of the most searched non-surgical body treatments in the UK — but many people aren't sure what actually happens during a session. This guide walks you through the process honestly, so you know exactly what to expect.

Lipo cavitation — more formally known as ultrasound cavitation — has become a popular non-surgical treatment across the UK over the past decade. If you’ve been searching for lipo cavitation UK and want a clear, honest picture of what the treatment actually involves, this guide is for you.

What Is Lipo Cavitation?

Lipo cavitation uses low-frequency ultrasound waves to target localised pockets of fat beneath the skin. The sound waves create tiny pressure fluctuations that disrupt fat cell membranes. The released fatty content then passes into the lymphatic system and is gradually processed and eliminated by the body.

It is not surgery. There are no needles, no incisions, and no anaesthetic. It is a non-invasive treatment carried out using a handheld device applied to the skin.

For a broader overview of how ultrasound and radio frequency treatments work together, see the ultrasound cavitation and RF guide, which covers the science in more detail.

What Happens During a Lipo Cavitation Session?

A typical session at Wumi Body & Face Studio runs between 45 and 75 minutes depending on the areas being treated.

Before the treatment starts, Wumi will cleanse the area and apply a gel to the skin — the same kind used in ultrasound scans. This helps the handpiece glide smoothly and ensures consistent contact.

During the session, the ultrasound handpiece is moved in slow, circular motions over the target area. You’ll feel a gentle warming sensation. Many clients also notice a faint buzzing or high-pitched hum in their ears when the device is near the upper body — this is a harmless side-effect of the sound frequency and passes immediately once the handpiece moves away.

After the treatment, most clients feel nothing unusual. There’s no redness, swelling, or need to rest. You can return to your normal day straight away.

Cavitation is frequently combined in the same session with radio frequency skin tightening, which uses heat energy to stimulate collagen and help firm the skin in the treated area. You can explore the full range of non-surgical fat reduction services to see how these treatments can be combined.

What Areas Can Lipo Cavitation Treat?

The treatment works well on soft, localised fatty tissue. Common areas include:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Flanks (“love handles”)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Back and bra-line area
  • Buttocks

It is less effective over very firm or fibrous tissue, and is not used on bony areas, the head, or directly over major organs. At your consultation, Wumi will assess your specific areas and advise whether cavitation is appropriate for you.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This is one of the most common questions people ask — and it deserves an honest answer.

One session will not produce dramatic results. Lipo cavitation works cumulatively. A typical course is 6 to 10 sessions, spaced about a week apart, to give your lymphatic system time to process what is released between appointments.

The appearance of treated areas can improve gradually over several weeks as the body eliminates the disrupted fat content. Staying well hydrated before and after sessions supports this process. Light movement or a short walk after each session is also encouraged to help lymphatic flow.

Results vary between individuals, depending on factors such as lifestyle, hydration, and how the body responds to treatment.

Is Lipo Cavitation a Weight-Loss Treatment?

No. This is important to be clear about. Lipo cavitation is a body sculpting treatment — it targets the appearance of localised areas, not overall body weight. The scales may not change significantly, and the treatment is not a substitute for a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

It works best for people who are already living a reasonably healthy lifestyle and want to reduce the appearance of stubborn pockets that aren’t responding to exercise. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for your goals, a £20 consultation at the studio is the best starting point.

What to Do Before and After Your Session

Before:

  • Drink at least 1.5–2 litres of water on the day of your appointment
  • Avoid a heavy meal in the two hours before treatment
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your session

After:

  • Continue drinking plenty of water for 48–72 hours
  • Avoid alcohol and processed foods for 24–48 hours to support lymphatic elimination
  • Light walking or gentle movement is helpful
  • Avoid hot baths or saunas immediately after treatment
