Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage Contraindications UK: Who Should Avoid It?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, low-risk treatment — but it is not suitable for everyone. Understanding the contraindications helps you make an informed decision and stay safe.

Lymphatic drainage massage is one of the gentler techniques in non-surgical body therapy — rhythmic, manual strokes that encourage the lymphatic system to move fluid and waste products more efficiently. For many people it is deeply relaxing and supportive of overall wellbeing. However, because it directly influences circulation and the body’s fluid systems, it is not appropriate for everyone.

This guide covers the main contraindications for lymphatic drainage massage in the UK, explains why each one matters, and outlines what the assessment process looks like at Wumi Body & Face Studio in Dartford, Kent.

What Is a Contraindication and Why Does It Matter?

A contraindication is a condition or circumstance that makes a particular treatment inadvisable because it could cause harm or worsen an existing problem. In the context of lymphatic drainage massage, a contraindication exists when stimulating lymph flow or applying manual pressure could put additional stress on an already compromised system — for example, encouraging the spread of infection or overloading a weakened heart.

Knowing your contraindications protects you. A thorough consultation before your first session is essential, and at Wumi Studio this is always the first step — see the lymphatic drainage massage guide for a full overview of how the treatment works.

Absolute Contraindications: When Treatment Cannot Proceed

The following conditions mean lymphatic drainage massage cannot be performed, regardless of the area to be treated.

Active infection or acute inflammation. Lymphatic drainage increases the movement of lymph fluid. If you have a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection — including cellulitis, erysipelas, or an infected wound — stimulating lymph flow risks spreading the infection through the body. Treatment must be deferred until the infection has fully resolved and your GP has confirmed you are well enough to continue.

Active cancer or lymphoma (without oncologist clearance). Lymphatic drainage has traditionally been contraindicated in cancer because of the theoretical risk of promoting the spread of malignant cells through the lymphatic system. Some oncology settings do use specialist manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) under medical supervision, but this is a clinical context. Wumi Studio is a non-medical studio and cannot treat clients with active cancer without written clearance from an oncologist.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or known blood clots. Encouraging fluid movement when there is a known clot present carries a risk of dislodging the clot. If you have a current or recent DVT, treatment is not possible. Seek medical advice about your fitness for any massage.

Congestive heart failure or severe cardiac conditions. Lymphatic drainage increases the volume of fluid returning to the heart. In someone with heart failure, this additional load can be dangerous. This contraindication applies to severe or unmanaged cardiac conditions specifically.

Kidney failure. The kidneys process and excrete the waste products that lymphatic drainage mobilises. If the kidneys cannot function adequately, treatment can lead to a build-up of waste.

Relative Contraindications: When You Need GP or Specialist Clearance

A relative contraindication does not automatically prevent treatment — it means Wumi needs written medical clearance before proceeding. Bring a letter from your GP or specialist to your consultation.

ConditionWhy clearance is needed
Uncontrolled hypertensionMassage affects circulation; blood pressure must be stable
Thyroid disorders (unmanaged)Drainage over the neck/throat area requires caution
Asthma (severe)Breathing response to deep relaxation can vary
DiabetesSkin integrity and circulation must be assessed
Recent surgeryFluid mobilisation near surgical sites needs surgeon sign-off
Autoimmune conditionsActivity levels vary; medical guidance required
LymphoedemaRequires specialist MLD training; your therapist will advise

Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage: A Note on Medical Clearance

Post-operative lymphatic drainage — particularly after liposuction, tummy tuck, or Brazilian butt lift — has become popular because it can help manage swelling and support recovery. If this is your situation, please read the body sculpting recovery guide for context.

At Wumi Studio, written clearance from your surgeon is non-negotiable before post-surgical sessions. Do not assume you are ready. Your surgeon set your healing timeline; Wumi works within it. Sessions are available at the Dartford studio and through the mobile home service across Kent, London, and Essex — but only once medical approval is confirmed.

Localised Contraindications: Areas to Avoid

Even when the rest of the body is suitable for treatment, certain areas may need to be avoided.

  • Open wounds, cuts, or broken skin — no massage over the affected area.
  • Recent scar tissue (under 6 weeks) — the area must be fully closed and healing well.
  • Varicose veins — direct pressure over varicosities is avoided; surrounding areas may still be treated.
  • Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis flare-ups — inflamed or broken skin is not treated directly.
  • Recent tattoos or semi-permanent make-up — the area must be fully healed.

Pregnancy and Lymphatic Drainage

Pregnancy is a contraindication for lymphatic drainage massage at Wumi Studio. Hormonal changes, increased blood volume, and the structural changes of pregnancy mean that manual therapy requires specialist obstetric training that falls outside the studio’s scope. Please wait until you are postnatal and have been cleared by your GP or midwife before making an enquiry.

What the Suitability Consultation Covers

Every new client at Wumi Studio completes a 30-minute consultation (£20, non-refundable) before any treatment begins. This is where contraindications are identified and documented. Wumi — who has ten years of experience and is certified through the CPD-accredited Curvology Academy — reviews:

  • Your current health status and medical history
  • Any medications that may affect treatment suitability
  • Recent surgical or medical procedures
  • Your goals and the areas you would like treated

The consultation is the right moment to be fully honest. Nothing you disclose will be judged; it simply allows Wumi to design a safe, effective plan — or to advise you to seek GP guidance first.

Non-surgical treatments have no downtime, but results build gradually and vary between individuals. Not a weight-loss or medical service. A consultation and suitability check are required; you must be 18 or over.
