Lymphatic Drainage Massage

What Happens During a Lymphatic Drainage Massage Session?

If you have never tried lymphatic drainage massage before, it is natural to wonder what the session actually involves. Here is a clear, step-by-step guide to what you can expect from start to finish at Wumi Body & Face Studio.

Before You Arrive: What to Do on the Day

A little preparation makes your session more effective. In the hours leading up to your appointment, drink at least 1–2 extra glasses of water. The lymphatic system relies on fluid to move waste products, so arriving well hydrated gives the treatment the best conditions to work in.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing — you will need to undress to the level of the areas being treated. Avoid applying heavy body lotions, oils, or fake tan to the skin on the day, as these can affect the therapist’s ability to work with the right pressure and glide.

If you are visiting the Dartford studio at Copperfields Walk or being seen as part of the mobile service across Kent or London, allow a few extra minutes to settle in before your session begins.

The Consultation and Intake Check

Every new client begins with a brief consultation before hands-on treatment starts. Wumi will ask about your health history, current medications, any recent surgeries or procedures, and your goals for the session. This is not just a formality — certain conditions (active infections, blood clots, uncontrolled heart conditions) mean lymphatic drainage massage is not appropriate, and it is important this is established clearly.

If you are booking post-operative lymphatic drainage — for example after liposuction or a tummy tuck — you must bring written medical clearance from your surgeon. This is a firm requirement, not optional.

The consultation also gives you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss which areas to focus on, and set realistic expectations. Results from lymphatic drainage massage vary between individuals and build over a course of sessions rather than appearing overnight.

Getting Settled on the Treatment Table

Once the intake is complete, you will be given privacy to undress and lie on the treatment table, covered with a modesty towel or sheet. The room will be warm and quiet — the aim is to encourage your nervous system into a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, which supports lymph flow.

No specialist equipment is used for manual lymphatic drainage. Unlike some of the other treatments in body sculpting — such as ultrasound cavitation or radio frequency — lymphatic drainage massage is entirely hands-on work performed by the therapist.

What Happens During Lymphatic Drainage Massage: The Technique

This is the core of the session, and it is likely different from any massage you have experienced before.

The pressure is very light. Lymphatic capillaries sit just beneath the surface of the skin, not deep in muscle tissue. Heavy pressure would bypass them entirely. The strokes used are gentle, slow, and rhythmic — more of a skin-stretching and pumping motion than the deeper kneading you might associate with sports or Swedish massage.

The sequence follows lymphatic anatomy. Wumi will work in a specific order designed to open up the lymph nodes closest to the drainage points first — typically the neck, armpits, and groin — before moving outward into the limbs and torso. This creates space for fluid to move toward the nodes rather than simply pushing it around.

The movements are repetitive and methodical. Each stroke is repeated several times to stimulate the vessels beneath. The session has a slow, meditative rhythm that many clients find deeply relaxing. It is not unusual to feel drowsy or even fall asleep during treatment.

Areas covered depend on your goals. For general wellbeing or post-treatment recovery, the whole body or specific quadrants may be addressed. For clients working through a course of non-surgical body contouring, the session may focus on areas that have recently been treated to help clear metabolised fat and reduce temporary swelling.

How You Will Feel During the Session

Most clients describe the sensation as deeply calming — more relaxing than a standard massage because of the slow pace and lack of firm pressure. Some people feel a gentle warmth in the treated areas as circulation increases. It is also common to notice a mild gurgling in the digestive area, which simply reflects the parasympathetic nervous system becoming more active.

You should not feel pain at any point. Light drainage massage is designed to be comfortable. If pressure ever feels uncomfortable, always say so.

After Your Session: The First Few Hours

Once the session ends, you will be given time to rest briefly before dressing. Wumi will advise you on what to do in the hours afterwards to support the treatment.

Key post-session guidance typically includes:

  • Drink 1–2 litres of water over the rest of the day to help the body flush the waste products that have been mobilised
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least a few hours, as both are dehydrating
  • Rest if you feel tired — a drowsy, floaty feeling after the session is normal and a sign your body is responding
  • Avoid heavy exercise immediately after, which can redirect blood flow away from the lymphatic drainage process
  • Where possible, avoid tight clothing on the treated areas for the rest of the day

Some clients notice they need to use the bathroom more frequently in the hours after treatment. This is the body excreting the cleared fluid and is completely expected.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

A single session can reduce puffiness and create a feeling of lightness, but meaningful, lasting change in the appearance of swelling, skin texture, or post-treatment recovery requires a course of sessions. Most clients working through a body sculpting guide plan will book 4–8 lymphatic drainage sessions spaced a week apart, though this varies with individual needs and goals.

If you are ready to experience a session for yourself, book a consultation or get in touch to discuss which approach suits you best. Wumi offers sessions from the Dartford studio and as part of the mobile service across Kent, all London boroughs, and Essex.

Non-surgical treatments have no downtime, but results build gradually and vary between individuals. Not a weight-loss or medical service. A consultation and suitability check are required; you must be 18 or over.
